Nvidia driver warning (196.75)

burning-computer2Sure, the image to the left may be a slight exaggeration, but it could, however, be a possible outcome for anybody using Nvidia’s latest driver, version 196.75. The fan controlling side of the driver apparently has some issues, causing cards to temporarily stop working after overheating. In some more extreme cases, the graphics chip has been completely fried.

The drivers have now been removed from the Nvidia download pages and they’ve issued the following statement:

We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.co.uk. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers do not download this driver. Instead, please stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our website and we also are asking our partners and others to remove temporarily this 196.75 WHQL driver as well.

So, if you’re running the driver in question or not sure which version you’re running, you’d better check soonish! For full details on how to rollback your driver to the previous version, head over here.
